SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Five different players from Swarthmore College Men's Soccer scored goals in a 5-0 rout of Cairn University on Wednesday evening at Clothier Field Stadium. In the final non-conference match of the season, the hosts blitzed the Highlanders for three first half goals and finished the job with two more in the second half.
Junior midfielder
Woojin Shin got the mid-week party started in the 13th minute with a bizarre goal. As junior defender
Michael Gross drove a ball into the box from the right flank, Shin sprinted in to meet it. But as he ran, Shin clipped a Cairn defender's foot and fell to the ground in the middle of the penalty area. Another Cairn defender headed the service directly into Shin's lap where he sat. The quick reaction of Shin to get up, touch the ball to his right, and tuck it into the lower right corner got the Garnet on the board. It was Shin's fourth goal of the season.
Just over 11 minutes later, senior wing
Omri Gal played a brilliant slip-ball through to freshman forward
Bless Tumushabe. Tumushabe neatly clipped the ball over a diving Cairn goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Senior forward
Quentin Millette scored his second of the season and third career goal to make it 3-0 going into the break. Millette's long-range shot bounced awkwardly to elude the Highlander's goalkeeper and extend the Garnet lead.
The second half started much the same as the first ended, with the hosts controlling play and camping out in the visitors' end. Six minutes in, Tumushabe took the ball from the left corner of the box, drove centrally, and laid it across to skipper
Joey Bradley. The senior midfielder took a touch to his right and bent a lovely shot into the upper left corner for the fourth Garnet goal, his first of the season.
With just over 11 minutes to play, junior midfielder
Jason Meuth replicated Bradley's feat, except that he was played in by junior
Julian Bueno, and he finished to the upper right corner of the goal. It was also Meuth's first of the season, and his second career goal. Senior goalkeeper
Oliver Steinglass completed the shutout, his first this season, recording three saves in the effort.
The resounding victory improved Swarthmore's record to 8-2-2 on the season, while Cairn dropped to 6-5-1. The Garnet finish the non-conference portion of the season with a 7-0-1 record outside the Centennial. The remaining five matches this season are Centennial matches, the next coming this Saturday at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore at 6:30 p.m.
