Becker Strikes Again as SJU Soccer Blanks Dubuque

Box Score

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Sundays are for Saint John's University junior forward Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels). A week after completing a hat trick with an overtime game-winner at Jamestown (N.D.), Becker scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Johnnies' 2-0 win at Dubuque (Iowa) on Sunday, Sept. 9.

A long free kick from senior defender Thomas Bell (Little Falls, Minn.) near midfield pinballed in the box until junior midfielder Nathan Stone (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) chipped the loose ball to Becker for the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute for SJU (3-0-1 overall).

Junior forward Patrick Erredge (St. Paul, Minn./Apple Valley), a goalkeeper during his first two years at SJU, made it 2-0 with his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute. A volley from freshman forward Guy Mohs (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) to the far post found senior midfielder Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford), who headed the ball back across the goal mouth to a hard-charging Erredge.

Shots were even at 9-9, though the Johnnies posted a 6-2 advantage on goal. The Spartans (1-2-0 overall) hit the post twice.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made three saves to record his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.

The Johnnies return home to host Concordia (3-2 overall) for the MIAC opener at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Haws Field.
