No. 24 Sagehens Take Down No. 8 Chicago 3-0 On Opening Day

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team took down No. 8 Chicago 3-0 on opening day at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

The Sagehens' win over No. 8 Chicago marks the highest ranked team that the Sagehens have beaten during the regular season.

Pomona-Pitzer had three different goal scorers in the win as Spencer Deutz netted an unassisted goal followed by first-year player Kendrick Dahlin and Charlotte Tapp both assisted by Isla Burch. Taylor Kane got the start and the win in goal after she ended her 45 minutes with three saves while Naomi Meurice got one save in the second half.

Once the Sagehens settled into their game in the first half, Pomona-Pitzer dominated possession and consistently created chances on the offensive side of their field. After knocking on the door, the Sagehens got the breakthrough goal after Tapp lofted a through ball over the Chicago backline to the feet of Deutz and after a good initial save by the Maroons' keeper, Deutz followed up with a tap-in to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute.

Chicago almost found an equalizer just minutes after the first goal as Kane was called to action to clear a long ball in the box followed by a screamer that she touched up to the bar to preserve the Sagehens' 1-0 advantage.

Chicago was clinging to a one-goal deficit for the rest of the first half, but the Sagehens continued to press the Maroons' backline to double their lead with a string of corners late in the first half. The Sagehens finally got their second goal of the first half after Burch played a perfect low cross right the right wing to the feet of Dahlin who one timed it past the keeper to double the Sagehens' advantage heading into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer came out and picked up right where they left off as it didn't take long to find the third goal of the day. Burch got the ball again down the right side and played it to Tapp in space. Tapp found the keeper off her line and played a perfect curler over the keeper's head to make it 3-0 Pomona-Pitzer in the 49th minute.

The Sagehens kept their perfect defensive form for the entire 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet against the No. 8 team in the nation to secure win number one of 2022.
