MADISON, NJ -- In their second game in as many days, the Coast Guard Academy Women's Soccer team fell to Westfield State University by a final score of 1-0. It is the Bears' first defeat of the season. As a result, Coast Guard wraps up the 2022 Drew Fall Festival with a record of 1-1.
Westfield State controlled the tempo of the game early on, rattling off the first four shots before Morgan Berthiaume netted her first goal of the season for the Owls at the 4:15 mark.
Coast Guard responded with three consecutive shots in their offensive side of the pitch, in what became a back and forth see-sawing first half. The second half would ultimately be largely controlled by Westfield, who held a 15-4 shot advantage over Coast Guard.
Sophomore goalkeeper, Emily Scharnitzky, made nine saves on the ten shots on goal this afternoon. Sophomore Riley Vicinanzo led Coast Guard with four shots and two shots on goal.
Ultimately, the Bears were unable to find the back of the net in the second half, dropping their season record to 3-1-0. Westfield State improves to 2-1-1
Coast Guard is back in action next Wednesday - September 14th, 2022 - for a cross-town show down at Connecticut College at 4pm EST.
