Storm battle Norse to double overtime draw
INDIANOLA, Iowa -- A first-half goal by Jordy Triana-Vasquez helped the Simpson College men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against one of the American Rivers Conference's top teams on Saturday afternoon in Buxton Stadium.
The draw is the first in the series with Luther (9-4-2, 4-0-2 A-R-C) since the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in 2015 and snaps a two-game losing skid for the Storm (4-6-2, 2-2-1 A-R-C).
Triana-Vasquez gave the Storm a 1-0 lead before the break when he took a pass from Enrique Idehen and sped through the Luther defense for his eighth goal of the season.
Luther's Marcos Vila evened the score in the 54th minute with a goal to the back corner of the net from just outside the goalie box. The Norse nearly took the lead shortly after when Javier Pastor Valls fired a shot from 20 yards out, but a diving save by William Kopp kept the tie in place.
After being held without a shot in the first overtime period, Simpson had four opportunities to end the match in double overtime but they were all unsuccessful. The Storm finished the contest with a 15-10 shot advantage over the Norse.
