ST. PAUL, Minn. – It was a rainy start to the Macalester women's soccer team's conference season, with the Scots falling 2-1 to Hamline on Monday afternoon.
Macalester still holds an impressive 13-3-3 overall record against the Pipers, as they started the series with 13 straight wins.
Sophomore
Maggie Bunker (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) was the Scots' goal-scorer in the game, tying up the game a few minutes before the halftime intermission. This was Bunker's first goal of the season and the second of her career.
The Scots' offense got off to a fast start in the contest, taking a shot less than a minute in, which was blocked by the Pipers. However, this would be the only shot that was taken by either team throughout the first 20 minutes.
The Pipers were the first to score, as junior Hannah Schatz headed in a goal off of a free kick in the 21
st minute.
Macalester answered with a goal of their own in the 42
nd minute. Bunker was able to take advantage of the goalie being out in front of the net, chipping a shot over the keeper to make it 1-1.
The first part of the second half went back-and-forth, but it was Hamline who broke the tie with a goal in a 61
st minute.
The Scots had an offensive outburst in the middle part of the half, taking two shots and two corners within the span of four minutes. They also took two more shots within the final ten minutes, but they were unable to get any of them past Hamline, allowing the Pipers to earn the 2-1 win.
As a team, Macalester held a 9-7 edge in shots and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. The team was efficient with their shots, aiming seven of their nine shots on goal throughout the game.
Junior
Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) tallied three saves in the contest and first year
Sarah Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) chipped in on offense with two shots.
Macalester will have their first home game of the season on Wednesday, September 11 taking on UW-River Falls at 7:30 p.m.
