MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/17/22)---Concordia conceded the first three goals against Carleton and fell 3-1 in a conference match-up in Moorhead.
The biggest difference in the game came right before the halftime break when the Knights scored with :01-second left on the clock to take a 1-0 lead. They were able to carry that momentum into the second half and scored two more goals in the first 19-minutes of play.
Concordia (3-10-1, 2-4-1 MIAC) went against the wind in the first half and did a solid job of stopping the Carleton attack. Neither team had any quality chances until the Knights struck at the 44:59 mark.
The play started in the middle of the field, and didn't appear dangerous as the start. The Knights won the ball in the middle of the field with 7-seconds to play, and played the ball forward. The ball skipped past a Cobber defender and found the foot of a Carleton forward who was 25-yards out from goal. The player flicked the ball on to an attacker who was at the top of the penalty area on the left side of the field. The attacker controlled the ball with 4-seconds remaining, took one touch and then hammered a shot into the far right side of the net just before time expired.
Carleton (7-5-2, 5-3-0 MIAC) doubled its lead in the sixth minute of play in the second half, and then went up 3-0 at the 64:05 mark.
The Cobbers then pushed forward and held the ball in the Carleton half of the field for most of the final 25 minutes of play. CC was rewarded for their offensive push in the 77th minute when freshman Yousif Alshihmani 1-timed a shot past the Knight's keeper from 7-yard out from goal. Fellow first-year player Gannon Brooks was able to dispossess a Carleton player at the top of the penalty area and drove the ball towards the end line before laying a perfect pass back to Alshihmani.
The goal at 76:19 was Alshihmani's team-leading fourth of the year. He has now scored a single goal in two straight games and four of the last six. All four of Alshihmani's goals have come in conference play which pushes him into a tie for sixth among conference players for goals in MIAC games. The assist was Brooks' second of the season.
The Cobbers had several chances in the final 15-minutes of play but couldn't get closer than the 2-goal margin.
The Knights held a slim 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Alshihmani, Nate Weaver and Kai Black all had two shots for CC.
Erick Torres stopped four shots in goal for Concordia.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have an away-home, conference/non-conference doubleheader this weekend. The Cobbers will play at St. Olaf on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m., and then return home to host Wis.-Whitewater on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
