CLAREMONT, CA. – First-year Alex Bonville netted the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Whitworth 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
The Sagehens had three different goal scorers in the win as Kyle Lau, Graeme Logan and Bonville all netted goals in the win. Goalkeeper Ethan Bae picked up the win with six saves.
The Sagehens got behind in the first half as the Pirates struck first with a goal in the 21st minute. Whitworth would only hold the lead for 10 minutes as the Sagehens came back late in the first half after Lau beat the keeper off of an assist from Jeffrey Tiglon to even the score at 1-1 heading into the break.
Whitworth got back on top again to start the half with a goal in the 60th minute and held its lead for the majority of the second half but senior Jared Mejia played a lob over the Pirate defense to the feet of Logan who slotted the ball past the keeper for the equalizer at 2-2 in the 78th minute.
After a hard-fought game that looked destined for overtime, the Sagehens found their game-winning goal as Bonville settled a ball from Logan and set up a curling ball past the keeper as the Sagehens sprinted to the corner to celebrate what was surely the game-winning moment of the match.
The Pirates attempted a late comeback in the final five minutes but Pomona-Pitzer controlled the final minutes of the match to come away with the win.
