Cobbers Fall At Home To St. Mary's
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/01/22)---Concordia and St. Mary's traded goals midway through the second half, but the Cardinals were able to come through with the game-winning goal at the 73:51 mark to earn the 2-1 victory.
The Cobbers and Cardinals played through a scoreless first half with few quality chances, before the scoring opened up in the final 45 minutes.
The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 3-5-1 on the year. CC is now 0-3-1 in the conference. St. Mary's is now 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.
St. Mary's opened the score sheet in the 63rd minute of play. They were able to control the ball on the right wing and then serve the ball towards the middle of the 6-yard box. The ball then caromed off the shin of one of the Cobber defenders as she was covering a Cardinals' attacker who was making a run towards the middle of the net.
The 1-0 deficit would only stand for 2:04 before freshman Kylee James notched her first collegiate goal.
Senior Sophia Robinson won the ball on the right wing and sent a cross through the St. Mary's penalty area. The ball came out to the top of the area where James stepped up and hammered a low shot from 20-yards out that found the lower left corner of the net.
The assist was Robinson's team-leading 10th point of the season.
Concordia found new energy with the goal, and started to put pressure on the SMU goal for the next five minutes. Unfortunately for CC, the next chance came from the Cardinals in the 74th minute of play. SMU won a throw-in on the right wing. They were able to find a player in the corner of the field and she turned and played a ball on the ground to the top of the 6-yard box where an unmarked player 1-timed a shot into the far left corner of the net.
The Cobbers had one more good chance, but Megan Barnick's shot from the top of the penalty area sailed just high.
St. Mary's held a 17-8 advantage in total shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Kaitlin Petrich made five saves in goal for CC.
UP NEXT: The Cobbers will have a week break before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 when they play Gustavus in St. Peter at 1 p.m.
