MINNEAPOLIS --
Emmanuel Egbujor (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored on a long sprint 2:09 into overtime, giving his Augsburg University men's soccer team an important 1-0 victory over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Macalester 0 (OT)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-2-1 overall (4-1-1 MIAC), Macalester 7-3-2 overall (4-1-1 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• A six-time All-American sprinter for the Augsburg track and field team, Egbujor used his speed to give the Auggies one of their biggest victories of the season. The play started on a feed from sweeper
Daniel Hedstrom (JR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) to
Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS), who flicked the ball forward to Egbujor, sprinting down the right side. Egbujor then slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.
• Augsburg's defense played a huge role in the victory, preserving the shutout despite Augsburg being outshot by an 18-4 margin. The Scots also had 11 corner kicks to Augsburg's two, but the defensive trio of Hedstrom,
Hsinku Lay (SO, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Luke Falk (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) was stout, denying several Macalester scoring chances. The three played the full 92 minutes in the game, and were joined on strong defense by center midfielders
Kouseng Yang (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Peyton Boich (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS).
• Goalkeeper
Garrett Kaelin (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) also had a solid game, recording six saves to pick up his second shutout of the season and Augsburg's fifth as a team.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the win, Augsburg moved into a tie for second place with both Macalester and St. Thomas, all with 13 points on the season, three points behind league-leader Gustavus.
• The victory snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) for the Auggies against Macalester. Augsburg's last win over the Scots was a 2-1 win on Sept. 28, 2013 in St. Paul, Minn.
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 26-9 margin this season. Augsburg's 26 goals scored are third-most among MIAC teams, while its nine goals allowed are tied for third-fewest in the conference.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "Macalester pushed us back the entire first half, and we hung on until the whistle. In the second half, we started growing into the game, but still had to withstand a barrage of Mac corner kicks. Our back three of Hedstrom, Falk, and Lay were really strong tonight when they had to be. Mac is a very good team, so to stay in the game as long as we did was important. We knew we just needed one chance to get in behind their line, and fortunately it happened right away in overtime. Hedstrom decided to slam a ball forward and Leo skipped it with his head to an onrushing Manni. I can only imagine what was running through his head at that moment after the chances he had at Hamline, so that goal was especially impressive, showing some real resiliency and mental strength."
• "In the MIAC, nothing is easy and anything can happen. It's one of the most difficult leagues to navigate in the country. After this important win, we now have to celebrate quickly and then regroup before we head to Carleton. The Knights have been on a fantastic run of form, as they are currently 10-1-1 overall and undefeated at Bell Field. That's insanely good."
FOR THE FOES
• Macalester had a goal taken off the board in the eighth minute, when the Scots were called for offside, nullifying a header goal by Floyd Krom in front, off a feed by Clayton Smith.
• Colton Wenig had one save in goal for Macalester.
