Late Goal Pushes Stevens Past Men's Soccer
Hoboken, N.J. - September 11, 2022 - The Springfield College men's soccer program fell by a 1-0 decision to Stevens on Sunday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Springfield falls to 1-2-1 on the season with Stevens improves to 4-0-1. Springfield took 12 shots with five on goal, while the Ducks put 10 on frame. Springfield held the advantage in corners, 6-3.
Despite the setback, Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) produced another impressive outing with nine saves and has played 261 shutout minutes over the last three games.
Knibbs collected the first save of the game as he scooped up an attempt from Emerico Vespucci. Springfield received its first attempt on goal from Koul Majok (Lynn, Mass.) as the sophomore headed down a ball towards that had a chance, but Troyan chested down the ball to keep it 0-0. Knibbs made three more saves to keep the Ducks' attack quiet for the remainder of the half. At 41:33, Maitoe Suppasuesanguan (Bangpongpang, Yannawa, Bangkok) ripped a bullet of a shot from a touch outside the right box, but the attempt blasted off the forearm of Troyan. That was the Pride's last attempt to go ahead before the half as the two programs entered the second period still locked up at 0-0.
Neither team could find an edge in the second period as both Knibbs and Troyan continued to anchor the defensive unit for each program. It took until the 81st-minute for a team to go ahead courtesy of Lucas Campbell. Knibbs made an incredible initial play on a Sean Masur shot, however the ball richoeted to the foot of Campbell and Knibbs nearly recovered for the second save, but the ball just barely skated into the net to put the hosts' ahead 1-0.
Springfield had a chance to tie in the final minute after Chris Cruz (Greenwich, Conn.) lined up a corner kick that bobbled around the box, but never developed into a scoring chance for the Pride allowing Stevens to take the win.
Springfield takes on Emerson College in its first NEWMAC contest of the season on Saturday at 1:00.
