UMass-Boston Comes From Behind to Shock Women's Soccer, 5-1

BOSTON--Krista Ledin recorded a hat trick to lead the UMass-Boston women's soccer team to a come-from-behind 5-1 win over visiting Western New England in non-conference action at the Clark Athletic Center Field on Wednesday. UMass-Boston--one of the favorites in the Little East Conference--improves to 10-4 on the season while WNE loses back-to-back games for only the second time this season to fall to 8-5-2.

Things started well enough for WNE as the Golden Bears scored the afternoon's first goal on a set piece. Karoline Sperber sent a corner kick into the penalty area where Bonnie Bousquet had a flick header to Becca Mercieri, who recorded her second tally of the season in the 4th minute

Less than a minute earlier, UMass-Boston thought it had scored the first goal as Ledin hit the cross bar and then the WNE defense cleared the ball off the goal line.

Ledin eventually found the back of the net in the 20th minute when her shot deflected off a defender, connecting with KK DaCosta on the first of two times in the first half. The duo hooked up again in the 30th minute as the Beacons went up 2-1 at the intermission.

Briana Kubik made eight saves for the Golden Bears, including a nice diving stop to her right off a low, driving shot by Tayla Andrews that trickled by the left post for a UMB corner in the 73rd minute.

Six different players had one shot for WNE, which played without the services of Tayler Mazurski and Chelsea Kuzio who are two of the Golden Bears' top three point producers.

Western New England resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference action at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastern Nazarene in Quincy.
