South Atlantic Week in Review- Week 3

By D3soccer.com Contributor

The first USC rankings are out, so some new faces appear this week and a few drop out. We’re keeping an eye on several teams that are starting to raise some eyebrows with their records and time will tell if they’re contenders or pretenders. Conference games are right around the corner, so let’s enjoy these last few non-conference matchups.

Christopher Newport (5-0-1 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com No. 6 / SA Region #1

The Captains rebounded from their disappointing draw against Dickinson with the total destruction of Methodist (3-2-0 / 0-0-0) Saturday afternoon, shellacking the Monarchs 11-0. Four different Captain players scored multiple goals - Emily Talotta, Riley Cook, Sarah Rhiel, and Maddie Cochran all scored two goals, while Sydney Rife, Ryanne Davidson, and Carson Pokorny added singles. The domination wasn’t limited to the offense, as the defense did not allow the Monarchs to muster even a single shot. The Captains outshot the Monarchs 45-0 (22-0 SOG) and held a 10-0 lead in corners taken.

The Captains rest up during the week to take a trip out west for the weekend, facing Mary Hardin-Baylor (2-3-0 / 0-0-0) Friday night and then Trinity (Texas) (4-1-0 / 0-0-0) on Sunday afternoon.

TCNJ (4-1-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com No. 2 / SA Region #2

The Lions hosted No. 9 Johns Hopkins (5-1-1 / 0-0-0) Wednesday night and despite outshooting the Blue Jays 21-11 (6-5 SOG), taking eight corners to Hopkins’ five, and controlling play for long stretches of the game, fell by a score of 2-1 at home. The Lions scored first in the 26th minute on junior forward Randi Smith’s tap-in, but Hopkins stormed right back to score less than two minutes later. Senior keeper Nicole Dipasquale made three saves on the night and kept the score from being worse.

The Lions traveled to Hoboken Sunday to take on Stevens (2-3-1 / 0-0-0) and came away with a 3-1 comeback win. The first half was played evenly, with the Ducks getting off six shots to the Lions’ five. The Ducks took the lead in the 14th minute with some nifty passing and held on to lead 1-0 at the half. The Lions came out strong in the second half and used their depth to slowly wear down and then pull away from the Ducks. The Lions tied the game in the 50th minute on sophomore Nikki Butler’s header, then took the lead for good in the 57th minute with classmate Kelly Carolan’s score. Junior Julianna Bertolino put the game away at the 77th minute mark, when senior Despina Lianidis’ penalty kick was initially saved by the Duck keeper, but then rolled along the goal line with Bertolino getting to the ball first to tap in the rebound. The Lions outshot the Ducks 15-9, but trailed in shots on goal, only putting five on frame compared to the Ducks’ six. They also trailed the Ducks in corner kicks 2-4.

The Lions play host this week for a couple of games. First, they’ll host the Pride of Widener (5-1-0 / 0-0-0) Wednesday night, then finish with Rutgers-Newark (4-3-0 / 0-0-0) Saturday afternoon.

Lynchburg (4-2-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com No. 19 / SA Region #3

The Hornet’s road trip to Georgia started out with a bust Saturday morning when they went into Atlanta and encountered a fired-up Emory (3-1-0 / 0-0-0) squad. The Hornets battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the game up with less than a minute remaining in regulation on sophomore Amanda Wigboldy’s PK conversion. Senior Alyssa Rudy scored the first Hornet goal off of classmate Monica Beck’s free kick in the 50th minute. The Hornet defense, who surrendered 37 shots (16 on goal), held the Eagles off the board in the first overtime period, but finally buckled to the relentless Emory pressure in the 102nd minute of play. Senior keeper Caitlin Dorsch made 12 saves in goal to keep the Hornets in the game and get them to overtime.

The Hornets bounced back from their loss the previous day by beating Piedmont (5-3-0 / 0-0-0) Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-0. For the second time in as many days, sophomore Amanda Wigboldy converted a penalty kick to take the lead in the 7th minute and this time the defense made it stand. The Hornets outshot the Lions 17-6 (7-5 SOG) and held a 6-2 lead in corners. Hornet senior keeper Caitlin Dorsch stopped all five Lion shots on goal to garner her first career shutout.

The Hornets take the week off this week with no games scheduled. Perhaps resting up for their big game with Christopher Newport (5-0-1 / 0-0-0) next Tuesday, September 25th?

Centre (7-0-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com No. 8 / SA Region #4

Wednesday night against Berea (1-5-0 / 0-0-0), sophomore Elizabeth Nelson scored the first two goals in a 9-0 rout of the Mountaineers. Classmate Brooke Smithson added two of her own and five more Colonels added single goals. The Colonels led in every category except saves, outshooting the Mountaineers 28-1 (18-0 SOG) and leading 6-1 in corners.

The Colonels continued to roll against Denison (1-3-3 / 0-0-0) Saturday afternoon, handling the Big Red 3-0 at home on Amend Field. Senior All-American Alana Hughes put the Colonels on the board with the game-winner in the 22d minute when she pin-balled a penalty kick off both posts and into the net. Senior Meghan Paynter added a goal in the 60th minute and freshman Mills Mullen sealed the win in the 79th minute with her third goal of the season. The Colonels outshot the Big Red 22-2 (14-1 SOG) and led six to two in corners taken.

Centre traveled to Mount Union (2-2-1 / 0-0-0) Sunday afternoon and ran their regular season winning streak to 29 games with a 4-0 victory. The Colonels scored two goals in each half with Taylor Gebhart and Alana Hughes scoring in the opening half, and Hannah Bandura and Meghan Paynter adding insurance goals in the second half. The Colonels put up 21 shots to the Purple Raiders’ eight (16-6 SOG) and took nine corners to two for Mount Union. The match showcased two freshman keepers, with Centre’s Jonelle Barron making six saves in goal while Mount Union’s Skyelar Mantz recorded twelve saves.

The Colonels will host Asbury (1-4-0 / 0-0-0) Tuesday night and Huntingdon (1-4-1 / 0-0-0) Saturday evening.

Washington and Lee (4-0-1 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com RV / SA Region #5

After their victories against Greensboro, Mary Washington and Rowan and a draw with Denison, the Generals spring into the preliminary regional rankings at number five. On Sunday afternoon against Sewanee (1-3-1 / 0-0-0), the Generals remained unbeaten with a convincing 3-0 win against the Tigers. The Generals got three goals from a couple of first-year forwards, with Lindsay White scoring twice (including the game-winner) and Sophia Roche’ adding some insurance in the 89th minute. The Generals outshot the Tigers 21-6 (6-3 SOG) and led in corners 8-1. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Washington and Lee in their first five games.

The Generals host Averett (0-6-0 / 0-0-0) Wednesday afternoon, before heading to Carolina for the weekend. First, they’ll face off against Meredith (1-5-0 / 0-0-0) in Raleigh before taking on North Carolina Wesleyan (1-3-0 / 0-0-0) Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mount.

Randolph-Macon (6-0-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com RV / SA Region #6

Saturday afternoon at Salem (2-3-0 / 0-0-0), the Yellow Jackets put their first four shots on and in goal, building a 4-0 first half lead en route to a 6-0 victory. Senior Gabby Nelson scored a hat trick, and junior Casey Kent added two of her own. Sophomore Nicole Czyzewski finished off the scoring in the 73rd minute to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-0 victory to match their perfect 6-0 record to start the season. The Yellow Jackets put up 15 shots on goal to the Spirits’ four (10-4 SOG) and held a slight edge in corners taken at 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets’ Wednesday game with Mary Washington (1-4-0 / 0-0-0) was postponed due to weather. A makeup date has not yet been announced.

The Eagles will host two games this week, a Wednesday afternoon match with Methodist (3-2-0 / 0-0-0) and a Saturday afternoon matchup with Marymount (0-4-1 / 0-0-0).

Rowan 3-2-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com RV / SA Region #7

The Profs hosted Johns Hopkins (5-1-1 / 0-0-0) Wednesday evening and fell 0-2 to the Blue Jays. The Profs were outshot 8-34 (3-15 SOG) by the Blue Jays and trailed in corners 2-6. The score would have been much worse had it not been for the gargantuan effort in goal by Rowan keeper Bristol Pizzuto, who recorded 13 saves in the loss.

The Profs’ Wednesday night game with Alvernia (2-2-0 / 0-0-0) was postponed due to weather. A makeup date has not yet been announced.

The Profs will travel to No. 25 Arcadia (6-0-1 / 0-0-0) for a Wednesday afternoon brawl. This is always a very physical matchup with two teams with very similar styles of play. The Profs will then host William Paterson (3-1-1 / 0-0-0) Saturday afternoon.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-1-2 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com RV / SA Region #8

The Marlins recorded their second draw in four days Wednesday night, drawing 1-1 with Salisbury (3-2-1 / 0-0-0) in a tightly played game in Virginia Beach. The Sea Gulls controlled the first half, putting up nine shots and a goal in the 10th minute. The Marlins came out of the break and controlled the second half, putting up 11 shots and their own score at the 64th minute on sophomore Camryn Terry’s unassisted goal. The Marlins were the only team to get off shots in the extra time, but neither team could score in OT. For the game, the Marlins outshot the Sea Gulls 17-15 (8-8 SOG), but trailed in corners 7-11.

Against Mary Washington (1-4-0 / 0-0-0) Saturday night, the Marlins had to come from behind and use nearly all 110 minutes to dispatch the Eagles. Freshman Gabrielle Lindo scored with just 66 seconds left in double overtime to give the Marlins the 2-1 victory. The Eagles scored first in the 33rd minute and the Marlins couldn’t match that until the 72nd minute. The Marlins put up 21 shots to the Eagles’ 11, but couldn’t find the back of the net until Lindo’s 2OT game-winner. The Marlins put seven shots on goal to the Eagles’ three and took nine corners to the Eagles’ two.

The Marlins travel to St. Mary’s (Md.) (2-3-0 / 0-0-0) Wednesday afternoon and then take the weekend off with no games scheduled.

Greensboro (5-1-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com NR / SA Region #9

The Pride burst onto the scene and into the regional rankings this week, finally garnering some respect for their record over the last two seasons. Since the start of the 2017 season, the Pride have gone 38-5-0, which ranks among the best records in the nation. After last season’s 17-1 finish, the Pride were not invited to participate in the National Tournament. This season, they’re hoping for different results.

Saturday afternoon against Marymount (0-4-1 / 0-0-0), the Pride started out slowly, holding a 1-0 halftime lead on freshman Haley Russell’s 11th minute goal. The Pride gained traction in the second half and began to pull away from the Saints, scoring four more goals en route to the 5-0 win. Senior Mercedes Bauza scored two goals, while junior Keeley Catarineau and sophomore Madi Bettencourt added a score of their own. The Pride outshot the Saints 20-3 (10-1 SOG) and took the only five corners of the game.

The Pride host Roanoke (4-2-0 / 0-0-0) Wednesday afternoon before heading to Eastern Mennonite (4-1-0 / 0-0-0) Sunday afternoon.

Rhodes (5-1-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com NR / SA Region #10

On Saturday afternoon against UW-Whitewater (2-3-1 / 0-0-0), the Lynx scored a goal in each half to beat the Warhawks 2-0 and run their record to 5-0 for the season. Senior Carly Cone headed home a corner kick in the 25th minute, and sophomore Alli Cundiff scored her seventh goal of the season in the 77th minute. Cundiff now has scored at least one goal in each game this season. The Lynx outshot the Warhawks 12-8 (6-3 SOG), but trailed in corners 3-4 on the day.

Sunday afternoon, the Lynx were initially overwhelmed by Washington U. (5-1-1 / 0-0-0), giving up three goals and being outshot 1-11. The Lynx played more evenly with the Bears in the second half, getting off five shots to the Bears’ six. They surrendered a lone goal in the second half to the Bears, falling by a final score of 0-4. The Lynx were outshot 6-17 (4-10 SOG) by the Bears, and did not take a corner kick while the Bears earned five.

The Lynx play host this week, first Wednesday evening welcoming Huntingdon (1-4-1 / 0-0-0) and then again Saturday afternoon with Texas-Dallas (6-0-0 / 0-0-0).

Emory (3-1-0 / 0-0-0) D3Soccer.com RV / SA Region NR

The Eagles weren’t in the regional rankings after the second week, but surely will be this week after overpowering No. 19 Lynchburg (4-2-0 / 0-0-0) Saturday morning. The Eagles dominated possession and play, especially in the first half, firing off 19 shots and getting goals from senior Shivani Beall and sophomore Arielle Williamson. Lynchburg battled back in the second half and scored two goals, the last being a penalty kick with under a minute remaining in regulation. The Eagles controlled overtime, surrendering no shots to the Hornets while putting up three of their own. Finally, in the 102nd minute, senior Caroline Kolski sent a low screamer past the Hornet keeper after Williamson received a long pass into the box and made a nice play to battle off a Lynchburg defender and find Kolski open at the top of the box. The Eagles outshot the Hornets 37-8 (16-6 SOG) and led 9-3 in corner kicks.

The Eagles made sure there were no overtime theatrics Sunday against Mount St. Joseph (1-4-1 / 0-0-0), scoring four first-half goals to cruise to a 5-0 win. The Eagles got goals from senior Shivani Beall, freshman Peyton Robertson, freshman Aubrey Blanchard, freshman Natalie Klar, and one from the Lions, who scored an own-goal in the 64th minute. The Eagles outshot the Lions 35-3 (11-2 SOG) and took an incredible 15 corners to zero for the Lions.

The Eagles will have only one game this week, a Saturday afternoon matchup with Maryville (Tenn.) (3-3-0 / 0-0-0).

Keeping an eye on...and how they did this week.

Oglethorpe (5-0-0 / 0-0-0): Win 2-0 v. Bob Jones (2-4-0 / 0-0-0); Win 3-0 v. Huntingdon (1-4-4 / 0-0-0)

Berry (5-1-0 / 0-0-0): Win 3-2 v. Huntingdon (1-4-1 / 0-0-0); Win 7-2 v. Agnes Scott (2-2-0 / 0-0-0)

Roanoke (4-2-0 / 0-0-0): Win 3-0 v. Meredith (1-5-0 / 0-0-0); Loss 3-1 v. McDaniel (4-1-0 / 0-0-0)

Stockton (5-1-0 / 0-0-0): Win 6-1 v. St. Joseph’s (L.I.) (2-2-1 / 0-0-0); Win 5-0 v. Centenary (N.J.) (0-4-1 / 0-0-0)

That’s it for Week 3. Only seven more to go.. That chill in the air is reminding us that conference games are starting after this week for many. Let’s enjoy these last few non-conference matches before the rivalry games start, the ones you circled at the start of the year against those teams that you love to hate… Take a look at the schedule - we’re in the middle of it!
