Hillel is a communications consultant, writer, and college counselor who recently opened up his own shop after 15 years as a communications professional at Temple University in Philadelphia and 17 years as a writer and editor at National Geographic magazine in Washington, D.C.
A lifelong soccer fan who remembers the dark days when the only domestic television coverage of the game was reheated highlights on “Soccer Made in Germany,” Hillel was drawn into the world of Division-III soccer when his son, Sam, started playing for Hamilton College in 2019. When not compiling men’s and women’s recruits for D3soccer.com’s Recruiting Classes pages, Hillel produces the content for “Off the Pitch,” a new series of informal Q&As with some of the men and women who’ve helped shape the game at the D-III level. It’s a return to sports journalism after a long hiatus; he hopes by now the people who read the columns he wrote as an undergraduate at Cornell University are either forgetful or forgiving.
