Stevens names Rensing as men's head coach

After leading the No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team to the Sectional Final of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship this fall, collecting the team’s eighth-straight conference championship and amassing an 18-3-1 record, former interim head coach Devin Rensing (Hoboken, N.J.) has been promoted to head coach of the Stevens men’s soccer program. Stevens director of athletics Russell Rogers (Branchburg, N.J.) announced the decision on December 1.

“In the relatively short period of time Devin has been at Stevens, he has proven to be an outstanding leader and mentor for our men’s soccer student-athletes” said Rogers. "He and his staff did an exceptional job this year in leading the team to a highly successful regular season, another Empire 8 Championship and the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. Devin has also immersed himself within the Stevens community and has gained respect and admiration throughout campus."

Rensing came to Castle Point this summer as associate head coach, and was promoted to interim head coach before the Ducks began play in 2011.

“It is truly an honor to be named the head coach of such a historically successful program here at Stevens. I would like to thank Mr. Rogers, my assistants Niko Gkionis (Hoboken, N.J.), Zach Carr (Carmel, Ind.)  and Ben Tamberella (Hoboken, N.J.) and the entire Stevens community for welcoming me this year and making my life easier. I would like to acknowledge [Colgate men’s soccer coach] Erik Ronning (Hamilton, N.Y.), who taught me a great deal about being a leader when I was his assistant and also my family for their unwavering support.”

Rensing’s first season on the banks of the Hudson included a 16-game winning streak, an 18-game unbeaten streak and the team’s first perfect Empire 8 regular season and tournament since 2007. The Ducks boasted nine All-Empire 8 selections and two Capital One / CoSIDA Academic All-District student-athletes.

“Our team certainly had a season to be proud of this year, and I am confident we can keep the tradition going in the future,” said Rensing. “I look forward to that challenge, and to the 2012 season.
