Flushing, NY --- The 2013 City University of New York Athletic
Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Women's Soccer All-Star team has
been announced, as Brooklyn College freshman forward Jordan
Kerwin has been named the Rookie of the Year. Head
Coach Patrick
Horne was honored as the Coach of the Year, while
six others were named All-Stars.
Kerwin made an immediate impact on the BC Women's Soccer program
in her first collegiate season, as she started in every game on the
year, totaling 18 goals (three game winning goals) and 42 points,
both team-highs. She also added six assists on the season. For her
efforts this past season, Kerwin was named the CUNYAC Rookie of the
Week four times and the CUNYAC Player of the Week once.
"It's such an honor to be recognized for such a great award," said
Kerwin. "Coming into this season I would have never imagined such
an amazing outcome. I'm so thankful to have been a part of such a
dedicated and hardworking team."
This is the second straight season that BC has had the top rookie
in the conference, as Shani
Abrahams was named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year in
2012.
Coach Horne led the second-year program to an incredible 15-4
overall record (a nine win improvement from last year's inaugural
season), including winning the CUNYAC Championship to earn the
automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer
Championships.
"It's tremendously gratifying when your colleagues recognize your
hard work, but this Coach of the Year award was only possible
because of the cooperation of a disciplined, hardworking team and
because of the support of my assistant coach Nathifa
Amuaku," said Horne. "Also, the support from Brooklyn
College president, Dr. Karen L. Gould, Athletic
Director Bruce
Filosa and the entire athletic department staff and
of course my family made this award possible."
Other members of the 2013 BC Women's Soccer team that were honored
by the CUNYAC, were senior midfielder Shani
Abrahams and freshman defender Jasmine
Fermin, who were both named First Team All-Stars.
Sophomore midfielders Sayla
Flores, Shani
Nakhid-Schuster and Stefany
Ibarra and senior defender Meagan
Cranston were all named Second Team All-Stars.
Abrahams, a vital member of the success of the BC Women's Soccer
program, had another stellar season to cap off her college career,
as she recorded 15 goals (five game winners), to go along with 10
assists for 40 points.
Similar to Kerwin, Fermin also made an immediate impact in her
rookie season, as she anchored a stout BC defense that totaled 11
shutouts and allowed just 17 goals in 18 games.
Flores, a CUNYAC First Team All-Star a season ago, avoided a
sophomore slump registering nine goals and 10 assists for 28
points. Flores was also named the Tournament MVP of the CUNYAC
Championships, helping to guide the Bulldogs to the conference
crown.
Nakhid-Schuster started in every game for BC this past season,
finishing the year with four goals and four assists for 12 points;
while Ibarra, a transfer, played in every game, while adding three
assists on the year.
Cranston also played in every game on the season, while adding two
assists.
