NCAA women's Sectional action kicked off on Friday evening with No. 4 Trinity (Tex.) opening with No. 2 Montclair State, and in the later match, No. 6 Wheaton (Ill.) facing off with No. 10 Emory.
In the first match of the evening, Trinity went up 2-0, and held on to defeat Montclair State 2-1 to advance to the National Quarterfinals.
Freshman Yasmeen Farra and junior Kelsey Falcone scored for the Tigers to notch a two goal lead, but Red Hawk freshman Jennie Hornstra scored in the second half to make it a one goal game. The Tiger defense shut down most of Montclair's remaining opporunities, finishing with the win, and advancing to face Wheaton on Saturday.
Note: Montclair had not allowed a goal since October 12, a streak of 797:29 minutes, and have given up only four goals all season. The final 21-1-1 record is a program best.
In the second match, Wheaton and Emory played into double overtime after a scoreless regulation, with the Thunder winning on junior Alexa Sharkey's goal in the 102nd minute. Sharkey's shot came from the 18, and deflected in off the far post, after a long run down the middle of the pitch.
Wheaton outshot the Eagles 23-13 in the match, yet the strong Emory defense allowed only eight shots-on-goal. Emory ends their schedule at 16-4-1, one win short of a record season.
Note: This Emory senior class ends their college career at 64-9-14, with four straight appearences in the NCAA post-season tournament.
