The Herons of William Smith are the new national champions in women's DIII soccer, as they defeated Trinity University (Texas) 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
In a face-off between the third and fourth ranked teams in the nation, it was Madeline Buckley scoring in the 10th minute off a feed from Kara Shue that made the difference.
Krista Longo added an insurance goal in the 51st minute.
Although Trinity outshot the Herons 24-12, 9-6 on goal, the Tigers could not get one by Chelsea Dunay, who collected nine saves.
The title is the first for William Smith since 1988, and the 480th victory for head coach Aliceann Wilber. The trip to this season's Final Four is the 10th in 25 years for the Herons.
The Herons wrap up their season at 23-1-0, while the Tigers suffer their first loss of the season, ending at 25-1-2.
