Top Matches Review
Each Monday during the season we will highlight matches from the previous week (Monday through Sunday, between the teams believed to be stronger sides in Division III soccer. We will use Massey Ratings to identify these teams. For last week, “preseason” rankings were used. There are two sections below:
- Matches where both sides were Top 25 rated.
- Contests between teams ranked 1 through 75.
As you would expect, preseason team rankings, whether opinion poll or statistically generated, are obviously driven by results from prior year(s). The preseason ratings used for Week 1 were based on recent history (2018,2019, and 2020 if available). The rankings are expected to fluctuate considerably early in the season as the Massey Ratings system "learns" the relative strength of each 2021 team.
It may simply be a random result at this early stage in the season but, the higher rated side went 14-3-7 in Week 1. On the women's side it was 11-4-2 for a total of 25-7-9. Somewhat surprising considering these matches were between closely ranked teams with no current season results to influence the ratings.
