Hood Athletic Department Raises Nearly $2,000 During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College athletic department raised close to $2,000 in donations during the month of October, commonly known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Several different athletic teams participated in fundraising activities and 100% of the proceeds went to various organizations which support the fight against breast cancer.
The field hockey and men's soccer teams kicked off the month by selling pink t-shirts and collecting donations at their home contests on Oct. 9. The Blazer student-athletes also wore pink shoelaces, headbands and ribbons during their games to show their support.
Then on Oct. 17, the men's lacrosse team hosted its second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament at Thomas Athletic Field. The Class of 2012 teamed up with the Blazers to sell t-shirts and other pink paraphernalia in addition to collecting donations at the gate. The men's lacrosse team also sported pink jerseys during the tournament.
Donations from these two events supported the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, which is the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
The volleyball team also hosted a "Dig Pink" night on Oct. 22 in Gambrill Gym. The squad wore special pink jerseys for the match, adorned the gym with pink decorations and raffled off prizes donated by local businesses. The volleyball team's donations went to the Side Out Foundation, which unites volleyball players and coaches to support breast cancer awareness, education and patient services.
In all, the department collected $1,920, which will be distributed to the various breast cancer awareness organizations.
