Bryan Wharton Scores Twice To Lead H-SC to 2-0 Victory Over Moravian

September 11, 2010

BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) contributed with his first multi-goal game of the season, netting two goals to lead Hampden-Sydney soccer to a 2-0 victory in the opening game of the Hampden-Sydney Classic. In the second game of the day, Catholic defeated Marymount 1-0.

H-SC controlled the game all-day and showed an impressive ability to maintain possession of the ball in the second-half behind crisp passing, strong defense, and a keen ability to win the 50-50 ball, thwarting Moravian's chances of putting a goal on the board.

A Moravian foul just barely outside of the top middle of the box gave Wharton a direct kick in prime position to score. Wharton did just that as he drilled the ball into the left post in the 22ndminute to give the Tigers the lead. The Tigers outshot the Greyhounds 9-6 in the first-half and Moravian held a 6-1 edge in corners.

The Tigers dialed up the intensity in the second-half to dominate the Greyhounds, putting little doubt into the minds of fans that H-SC would protect their home field. Hampden-Sydney held an impressive 14-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. To seal the victory, Wharton did what he does best as he posted his third goal of the season in the 50th minute on a rebound from a saved Nick DeProspero (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) shot.

H-SC will return to the pitch tomorrow to close out the Hampden-Sydney Classic with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Catholic University, the reigning Capital Athletic Conference champions and an NCAA participant from the 2009 season. Moravian will square off against Marymount at 12 p.m. in the other game.
