Second-Half Surge Propels Blazer Men to 3-1 Home Win over La Roche
FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Eric Diehl of the Hood College men's soccer team (1-1) assisted on all three Blazer tallies in a 3-1 nonconference victory over visiting La Roche College (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
Hood, which improved to 5-2 all-time in home openers, notched its second victory in five tries over the Redhawks in come-from-behind fashion.
After a scoreless first half, Chad Trozzi got the Redhawks on the board with an unassisted score in the 64th minute. The Blazers drew even in the 78th minute when junior Doug Raftery cashed in on a corner kick opportunity. Classmate Chris Mendez took the corner and booted the ball into the box where it was played by sophomore Jaime Ramirez. Ramirez, who led the Blazers in assists last season, setup Diehl who found Raftery for the equalizer.
Then less than three minutes later, junior Matt Dybala scored his second goal in the blue-and-grey to put Hood on top, 2-1. Diehl was the setup man once again in the 84th minute when he fed junior Chris Mendez, who registered his second goal of the fall to cap the scoring for the Blazers.
Sophomore Will Lane made the start in goal and recorded his first victory of the season, making one save on the day.
Hood outshot the Redhawks, 20-11, and attempted 10 corner kicks to La Roche's two.
The Blazers continue their program-record five-game homestand Tuesday hosting Valley Forge Christian College at 4 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
