John Duncan's Overtime Goal Sends No. 10 Washington U. Past Chicago, 2-1
St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 2010 – Senior John Duncan celebrated Senior Day by scoring a goal early in the first overtime as the No. 10 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer ended regular season play with a 2-1 victory over the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Francis Field.
Duncan's shot from 25 yards out got by Chicago goalkeeper Mason Harless at 91:41 for the game-winner. The goal for Duncan was his second of the season.
Prior to the contest, Washington University honored its eight seniors who played their final regular season home game on Saturday against the Maroons. Joining Duncan on the field was fellow seniors Harry Beddo, Cody Costakis, David Klein, Alex Neumann, Randall Schoen, Andrew Serio and Chris Weinstein. The Class of 2011 has led the Bears to a 51-18-10 (.709) record in their four years on the Danforth Campus.
Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson picked up the win in goal for Washington University, making three tremendous saves in the second half. Serio played the opening 45 minutes in the nets for Washington U., allowing one goal and making one save. Washington U. outshot Chicago, 16-11, for the game, and had a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington University jumped out first in the 28th minute, as junior Kenji Kobayashi drilled a shot from 15 yards out past Harless for his fourth goal of the year.
Chicago (8-8-1, 2-4-1 UAA) answered right back at 29:57 as the Maroons took advantage of a foul from Washington U. 40 yards outside the box. Alex Clifford sent a free kick into the box, where Rashad Masri was left unmarked and headed home the cross to tie the score at 1-1. The goal for Masri was his first of the season. Washington U. outshot Chicago, 8-4, in the first half, and the Bears had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington University ends regular season play with a 14-1-4 overall record, including a 4-1-2 mark in conference play. The Bears finished second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with 14 points, one point behind conference champion New York University. The Violets edged Brandeis University, 1-0, on Saturday to claim their first-ever UAA title.
Washington University, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Central Region rankings, is in line for an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. The NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Selection Show will be streamed live on www.ncaa.com on Monday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. (CT). The Bears have made 18 NCAA appearances in school history, and looking for their first appearance since 2007.
