Stevenson Slips Past Hood Men's Soccer, 3-1
FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's soccer team (6-7, 2-4 CAC) came up on the short end of a 3-1 Capital Athletic Conference decision Friday, falling to the Stevenson University Mustangs (9-4-1, 2-3-1 CAC) at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Mustangs, who claimed their first road victory of 2010, advanced into the No. 4 spot in the CAC stadings while the Blazers dipped to eighth with two league contests remaining.
Stevenson posted a pair of first-half goals within a span of 10:38 and took that 2-0 advantage into the break. Hood was held to just two shot attempts in the opening stanza compared to the Mustangs' 10. The Blazers turned up the intensity in the second half and fired off eight attmepts, including four on target. Stevenson's Ansger Otto, who leads all of NCAA Division III in scoring with 33 points, was held to just one shot by the Blazer defense through the first 70 minutes of the contest. But Otto wouldn't be denied in this one and pocketed his 14th score of the fall in the 71st minute to cap the Mustang scoring.
Junior Chris Mendez booted his team-high ninth goal of the season in the 85th minute when he cashed in on a penalty kick try.
Sophomore Will Lane rejected six Mustang attempts while SU's Ryan Flannelly made four saves on the day.
Hood's final home contest of 2010 is slated for Tuesday against Lancaster Bible College at 3 p.m. The Blazers then hit the road for their final two CAC matchups of the fall - at third-place Mary Washington on Oct. 23 and at first-place York (Pa.) on Oct. 26.
