Hood Men Edge Out Lancaster Bible, 1-0
FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's soccer team (7-7) scored in the 67th minute to defeat the Lancaster Bible College Chargers (9-8), 1-0, in their final home contest of the season at Thomas Athletic Field Tuesday.
Sophomore Will Lane continues to impress in the net, blocking a penalty kick in the first half and stopping several other difficult Charger attempts to score. A foul in Hood's box in the 37th minute of play sent Charger Kyle Zook to the penalty mark where Lane dove to his left to prevent the score and both teams went into halftime in a scoreless draw.
Early in the second half, officials charged a yellow card against Lancaster Bible's Lawrence Lartey. The offense gave the Blazers momentum and they outshot the Chargers 4-0, capped by a score from junior Chris Mendez with the combined assist from Mat Dybala and Eric Diehl. The goal serves at Mendez's team-leading 10th this season. Lane staved off a number of shots late in the game by the Chargers in a last-minute scramble to score, but managed to protect the narrow lead and help the Blazers reach the .500 mark once again this season.
Hood outshot Lancaster Bible, 19-14, and both teams were even with six corner kicks. Goalkeepers Lane and Charger Jarrod Bergey both collected six saves on the day.
The Blazers also recognized several influential faculty members during halftime of the contest as part of Hood's first Faculty Appreciation Day.
Hood goes on the road for its next matchup Saturday against Capital Athletic Conference foe University of Mary Washington at 3:30 p.m.
