Lawless Resigns Soccer Post

More news about: Shenandoah men's team

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Wayne Edwards announced Monday that Des Lawless has resigned his position as head men's soccer coach.

Lawless, who just completed his fifth season as the Hornets head coach, is resigning his position in order to pursue teaching opportunities in higher education.

Lawless is currently a Doctor of Organizational Leadership candidate at Shenandoah and is 18 months from completing his coursework.

"I have long wanted to teach," Lawless said. "As I have gotten into this (academic) program, I realized that teaching is where I truly want to be and to be able to realize that goal, I need to step away from coaching.

"I think we have an excellent group of young players around whom the new coach will be able to build a successful program."

Shenandoah finished this season 4-11-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the USA South. Lawless ends his SU coaching career with a 21-62-8 overall record.

"I want to thank Des for all of his hard work for Shenandoah," Dr. Edwards said. "I am pleased that he will be with us through the end of June to help with the program's transition, to perform his secondary duties and to lead the Global Citizenship Project trip to Ethiopia over spring break.

"His presence and leadership will ensure a smooth transition for our men's soccer program and its student-athletes."

Edwards added that a national search will be conducted for Lawless' successor and expects to have the new coach in place for the start of the non-traditional season in mid-spring.
