Devils Handle Shoremen 5-1 in Centennial Opener

(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's soccer team improved to 5-0-1 and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 5-1 victory over visiting Washington College on Saturday.

 

The Red Devils struck early as Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School of El Salvador) held off two defenders to finish an assist from Thomas Parkinson (Alamo, Calif./Westfield, N.J.) in the 16th minute.

 

They went in front 2-0 on an unassisted goal by senior Dale Rodman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the 30th minute.

 

Parkinson went straight to goal to open the second half, putting the Red Devils in front 3-0, just 14 seconds after the break. Mena tallied his second goal of the day, scoring off an assist from Rodman in the 52nd minute.

 

Senior David Lister (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) closed out the scoring for the Devils in the 69th minute, finishing a great attack with assists from first-year Sung Woo Kim (Seoul, Korea/Fryeburg Academy, Maine) and senior Mark Lyle (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey).

 

The shutout was spoiled with 11 minutes to play as a penalty was awarded to Washington. Jordan Haas converted the kick to snap the Devils' shutout streak of five games. The Devils held opponents scoreless for 548 minutes to start the season.

 

Sophomore Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) does remain unscored upon this season. He earned the win, playing 66 minutes before Christian Hall (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) came on to close out the game.

 

The Devil defense turned in a strong performance, allowing just six shots on the day. The Devils forced 11 corners while not surrendering any in the game.

 

Chris Phipps made 13 saves for Washington (2-4, 0-1) while Tyler Cabot came on to stop two shots.

 

The Red Devils (5-0-1, 1-0) travel to Messiah College for a 7:00 start on Wednesday night.
