Devils Battle Bullets to 2-2 Tie in Men's Soccer

More news about: Dickinson men's team

(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's soccer team battled for 110 minutes, through double overtime to tie visiting Gettysburg, 2-2, in Centennial Conference play Saturday afternoon. Both the Red Devils and the Bullets have conference records of 3-2-2 while Dickinson moves 9-3-3 overall and Gettysburg stands at 4-8-2 on the season.

Both teams were looking for a big win, as they are neck and neck in the conference standings. First-year Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School) struck first for the Devils. The goal came at 13:25 as Mena hit a half-volley into the net off of a cross from senior Thomas Parkinson (Alamo, Calif./Westfield, N.J.).

Gettysburg answered almost immediately, just 24 seconds later, as Teddy McCarthy scored an unassisted goal to tie the game.  Eric Hynes scored on a cross from a free-kick by Teddy Smith to give the Bullets a 2-1 edge in the 20th minute.

Defense dominated the rest of the first half, and well in to the second. The Devils found the equalizer on a penalty kick with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation. Mena went for a header and was knocked to the ground as Bullet goalkeeper Connor Darrell came out to clear a high ball played into the penalty area. The Devils had a PK saved earlier in the game, but senior Dale Rodman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman)  stepped in and calmly converted the kick, sending the game into overtime.

Two overtime periods ensued, though neither team was able to find the net in those 20 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) was solid yet again for the Devils, saving three goals on the day.

Dickinson travels to Westminster, Maryland to face McDaniel College on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
