Sutton Takes Shenandoah Men's Soccer Position
WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Wayne Edwards announced Thursday that Corbin Sutton has accepted an offer to become the Hornets new head men's soccer coach.
Sutton comes to Shenandoah after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant men's soccer coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
He also served as the Mariners head men's tennis coach.
Sutton becomes the fourth head men's soccer coach in SU history and replaces Des Lawless, who announced his resignation in November.
Prior to his two years at USMMA, Sutton sandwiched two years as an assistant at DePauw (Ind.) around one year stints at Division I schools Lafayette and Northwestern. He received his NSCAA Advanced National Coaching Diploma in 2007 while at DePauw.
Last April, Sutton added an NSCAA Premier Diploma to his resume.
A native of Tulsa, Okla., Sutton is a 2001 DePauw graduate and helped the Tigers to 55 wins and two NCAA Tournament appearances in his four years at the Greencastle, Indiana school.
A four-year starter, Sutton served as co-captain his senior year.
"I am extremely excited to join Shenandoah University as its new head men's soccer coach," Sutton said. "I would just like to thank Dr. Edwards and the search committee for this opportunity.
"I look forward to moving to Winchester in the next couple of weeks and to working with the student-athletes in our spring season. I hope that this spring will be a springboard for us into successful fall."
Sutton leaves the Merchant Marine Academy after assisting the Mariners to 28 wins and two NCAA Tournament appearances in the past two years. In 2010, USMMA finished 13-3-5 and made it all the way to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament on its way to a No. 8 final national ranking.
"It was a special two years with lots of success," Sutton said. "I wish everyone at the Academy the best of luck going forward."
Shenandoah finished the 2010 season 4-11-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the USA South. The 30-man roster had just two seniors.
"Our men's soccer coaching candidate pool included more than 150 individuals and a large number of highly qualified candidates," Dr. Edwards said. "Corbin Sutton emerged as the consensus choice of everyone involved in the search process, and I am very happy that he has accepted our invitation to join the Shenandoah University family.
"All of us look forward to his arrival on campus and to his leadership of the men's soccer program for years to come."
Sutton is scheduled to begin his full-time duties April 1.
