Saints Open the Season With a 5-2 Win Over Earlham
(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Senior midfielder Alex Oeswein (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) scored two goals to lead the Thomas More College men's soccer team to a, 5-2, season-opening win over Earlham College today (Thursday, September 1, 2011) in non-conference match at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 1-0 and with the loss, the Quakers fall to 0-1.
Earlham took an early 1-0 lead when Ameer Yusuf scored at the 24:40 mark of the first half. The Saints answered with a goal at the 34:07 mark when freshman forward Alec Robbins (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) scored off an assist by freshman midfielder Jacob Plummer (North Olmsted, Ohio/Corpus Christy Academy) to tie the match at 1-1. Thomas More to a 2-1 lead into halftime when it scored on an own goal at the 42:59 mark.
The Saint increased the lead to 3-1 at the 49:28 when Oeswein scored on a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Alex Bertke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) gave the Saints a 4-1 lead when he scored off a cross from junior defender Jacob Waldrop (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) at the 58:39 mark. The Quakers cut the lead to 4-2 at the 70:12 mark when Ameer Yusuf scored off an assist from Shvan Al-Hussein. Oeswein closed out the scoring at the 84:03 mark when he scored on a cross from senior forward Ricky Barria (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) for the final score of 5-2.
Senior Zack Lawson (Frankfort, Ky./Frankfort) earned the win in goal as he allowed two goals, while recording four saves in 90 minutes in goal.
Thomas More out-shot Earlham, 18-10, but the Quakers won the battle of corner kicks, 4-3.
The Saints return to action on Saturday (September 3) when they host Anderson College at 3 p.m. at The Bank of Kentucky Field.
