Overtime goal nips VWC in CNU tournament
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Catholic University's Cardinals found the back of the net in a second overtime session Saturday en route to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins in men's soccer.
Mike Brennan (Featerville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) put the game-winner into the left side of the goal in the 103rd minute to lift CU to the win at Captains Field in the Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic. Earl Hamilton (Fort Washington, Md./Gonzaga) was credited with the assist.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) created the overtime situation in the second half when sophomore Ricardo Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) scored just 3:15 into the period. His shot was assisted by sophomore Jordan Elgin (Coppell, Texas/Coppell).
Catholic (1-1) jumped in front late in the first half when Hamilton scored in the 36th minute.
Both teams recorded 16 shots, with VWC holding a 9-5 advantage in the second half. VWC also held an advantage in corner kicks, 10-6.
Senior Jay Cobel (Porstmouth, Va./Churchland) recorded seven saves in goal for the Marlins. Cam McGrory (Concord, Mass./Carlisle) also produced seven saves for Catholic.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to Captains Field on Friday, Sept. 9, to face No. 6 ranked CNU at 7 p.m.
