BRISTOL, R.I. – Sparked by 90 shutout minutes from freshman goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.), the Norwich men's soccer team opened the 2011 Roger Williams University Turfer Athletic Classic on a high note Sept. 3.

The Cadets managed three shot attempts but one found Rhode Island College's net during a 1-0 victory. Sophomore defender Ryan Campbell (Damascus, Md.) sent home the eventual game winner in the 44th minute. He took his shot off a one-hop throw-in pass from junior defender Mike Ravenelle (Merrimack, N.H.).

"We want to be able to take advantage of our strength and size on set pieces," Coach Kyle Dezotell said. "The throw-in was comparable to a set piece, and it worked out for us. We are ecstatic about the win."

Hallstrom made it hold up despite a 26-3 shots edge for RIC. The freshman ended with eight saves.

"Christian was very composed," Dezotell said. "He just kept making big plays throughout. He stepped up when we needed him to."

Norwich improves to 1-1 on the season and continues play at the Turf Archer Classic Sunday, Sept. 4. They take on host Roger Williams at 1:30 p.m. Roger Williams and Castleton battled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
