Norwich Slides by RIC, 1-0, Despite Offensive Barrage

Bristol, RI-The Rhode Island College men's soccer team just couldn't find the back of the net in its season opener against Norwich University on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cadets, 1-0, in the second game of the Turfer Athletic Classic hosted by Roger Williams University. |

The Anchormen (0-1) opened the game as the offensive aggressors, outshooting Norwich (1-1), 12-3, in the period. Despite the advantage in shots, RIC simply couldn't solve the Cadets' freshman goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, NV), who finished with eight saves. |

The defense gave Hallstrom plenty of help throughout the game. One of the more remarkable defensive plays came in the 37th minute when freshman defender Chris Bristol (Clinton, CT) stopped a header by freshman forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) with a kick save to keep the Anchormen off the scoreboard. |

Although the Cadets managed to muster just three shots in the contest, they caught a break with 55 seconds to go in the first half as sophomore defender Ryan Campbell (Damascus, MD) played the ball off a hop from a throw-in by junior defender Mike Ravenelle (Merrimack, NH) and put Norwich up, 1-0. |

In the second half, the offensive flurry by Rhode Island College continued as the Anchormen put up 14 shots in the frame, while holding Norwich without a single offering. RIC had a handful close opportunities late in the game, but couldn't capitalize. |

Sophomore midfielder Ryan Rasieleski (Coventry, RI) led RIC with five shots, while junior defender Donald Dane (Derry, NH) launched four. |
Senior netminder Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) took the loss (0-1), making one save. |

In upcoming action, the Turfer Athletic Classic continues on Sunday, as Rhode Island College battles Castleton State College (11 a.m.). |
