More news about: Centre men's team

The Colonels, which fell 2-0 in their opener, improve to 1-1, while Oberlin drops its second match in the early going to fall to 0-2.

The lone goal of the match came at the 27:54 mark in the first half when senior Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) hit the back of the net off an assist from junior Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.).

Oberlin out-shot the Colonels 14-5 and held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks, but were unable to beat Centre goalkeeper Zach Sosnovich (Woodbridge, N.J.). Sosnovich stopped all six shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season.

"I said we would rely on our leadership tonight and boy did they come through for us," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.

"Our defense was on point all night and they dealt with an excellent Oberlin attack. I have to compliment Oberlin. They have been gracious hosts at their Classic, first class facility, and a much improved team from when we saw them last year at our Bob Allen Classic. Robbe Tarver clearly our man of the match," Burch finished.

Centre will return home to host the 22nd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10. The Colonels will play Hanover College Friday at 7:30 p.m., and then play Baldwin Wallace College Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
