Mariners Stand Firm Against Nor’Easters
BANGOR, Maine – Chad McDonnell's (East Lyme, Conn.) header early in the 48th minute was all of the offense Maine Maritime Academy needed to knock off the University of New England on Sunday. The Mariners (1-0-1) found the net twice more for a 3-0 win over the Nor'Easters (0-3) to wrap up action at the Husson Classic.
McDonnell redirected a corner off of the boot of Gabriel Warren (Edgecomb, Maine) to give the Mariners their first goal of the season. It stood up as the game winner because William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) and his defense turned in their second-straight shutout. Lacour turned away four shots. Today's match, combined scoreless tie in Saturday's season opener, leaves the Mariners holding a 200-minute shutout streak heading into Wednesday's home opener against Maine-Machias.
The Mariners tipped the field toward the UNE net all afternoon, but were only able to muster four shots in the first half. After McDonnell's breakthrough early in the second half, Nate Tipton (West Chester, Pa.) put UNE in a deeper hole after he banked the post in the 53rd minute. Tipton collected his own carom and sent it across the box for Abdullah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) who slipped it inside the post to make it 2-0.
Nick El-Hajj (Winterport, Maine) finished off the day's scoring late in the 82nd minute, punching it home on a set piece on the right side of the UNE box.
The Mariners outshot UNE 18-11 and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
