Men’s Soccer: Cadets Fall 2-1 to Roger Williams at Turfer Classic
BRISTOL, R.I. – For the second straight day the Norwich men's soccer team was heavily outshot at the 7th annual Turfer Athletic Classic. However, unlike Saturday's dramatic 1-0 upset win over Rhode Island College, the Cadets were unable to pull off the upset again on Sunday against host Roger Williams.
After a scoreless first half, Roger Williams wasted little time getting on the board in the second half as Andres Daza found the back of the net just three minutes in to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Roger Williams (2-0-1) added to its lead in the 85th minute when tournament Offensive MVP Trevor Hoxsie beat two NU defenders and push the lead to 2-0.
Norwich (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) was able to cut the deficit back down to one less than two minutes later when junior midfielder Eric Weir (Ipswich, Mass.) found sophomore forward Wesley Keslin (Brossard, Que.) on a corner kick that Keslin promptly deposited in the back of the net.
However, that's as close as NU was able to get and the Cadets had to settle for second place after winning a tie-breaker with Rhode Island College due to their head-to-head win on Saturday.
Freshman goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) made his second straight start in net for Norwich, posting six saves to drop to 1-1 on the year. He was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Keslin and sophomore defender Ryan Campbell (Pooleville, Md.), who scored the lone goal in Saturday's win over RIC.
Roger Williams outshot Norwich 21-5.
"Overall, we're pleased with our performances this weekend. We learned what it means and what it truly takes to compete for 90 minutes," Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell said. "We schedule such quality competition at the risk of potentially losing matches in order to prepare us for GNAC competition."
Norwich continues its grueling road trip on Wednesday when the Cadets travel across Lake Champlain to take on perennial powerhouse SUNY Plattsburgh. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
