Redlands Men’s Soccer Falls Late to Scarlet Raiders
The University of Redlands men's soccer team suffered a 1-2 overtime defeat to East Coast opponent, Rutgers University – Newark (NJ), on Saturday in non-conference action. The Bulldogs came back from a late deficit to send the contest into an extra period, but the Scarlet Raiders pulled out the win in the eighth minute of added time.
The game remained scoreless for the first 59 minutes before junior midfielder Brian Barrera (Elizabethtown, NJ) punched in a top-left goal for Rutgers-Newark. He capitalized on open space in the middle of the field after receiving quick passes from teammates senior midfielder Tom King (Cherry Hill, NJ) and sophomore forward Daniel Naranjo (Elizabeth, NJ).
Shortly after, the Maroon and Gray picked up the pace on the offensive third, creating a scoring opportunity for 2010 All-Region defender sophomore Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA). Senior defender Sean Cruz (The Woodlands, TX) set up his teammate with a smooth corner kick, which Marquez headed in with less than seven minutes left in regulation for his second career goal.
With the afternoon heat beating down, the teams faced the first sudden-victory overtime period. Rutgers-Newark worked the ball downfield to eventually see Naranjo finish up the game with a 1-v-1 goal in the 98th minute.
Redlands out-shot the Scarlet Raiders, 22-6, with 12 attempts coming in the second half. Senior forward Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) led the Bulldogs by totaling five shots.
Redlands returns to action on Sun., Sept. 11, when the squad hosts non-conference foe Chapman University in a 7 p.m. tilt at Farquhar Field.
