Colorado College, Minnesota Morris Battle to Scoreless Draw
The Colorado College men's soccer team worked overtime on Labor Day, but in the end had little to show for the effort.
Despite finishing the 110 minutes with a 23-13 advantage in total shots and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks, the Tigers and Minnesota Morris battled to a 0-0 tie at CC's Stewart Field on Monday afternoon.
"What it shows is soccer is a tough game to win against comparable opponents," head coach Horst Richardson said. "You have to convert on one out of 10 opportunities at this level. This was a game we could have won, but probably could have lost as well. I'm basically satisfied with the tie. It was a good game against a good Division III opponent."
Junior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz stopped four shots while going the distance to record his first shutout. He also maintained his perfect 0.00 goals-against average and 1.000 saves percentage. As a team, the Tigers lowered their GAA to 1.15 and raised their saves percentage to .810.
Marowitz made his two biggest saves late in the game. He stopped Michael Schuweiler's re-direct off a corner kick in the 76th minute and denied Matt Johnson's low drive toward the near post with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime.
At the other end, senior keeper Tyler Weber, a product of Erie, Colo., kept the Cougars in the game by making a pair of finger-tip saves in the second half. He stopped Chris Lutz's laser toward the top right corner in the 53rd minute, and got just enough of a bullet off the foot of Ben Sandalow to nudge it over the crossbar with a little more than five minutes to play in regulation.
CC had another excellent chance to break the deadlock in the 87th minute when sophomore midfielder Lorenzo Pozzolini chipped a shot over Weber's head at the top left edge of the box, but UMM's Scott DeVries was able to get back in time to clear the ball just before it crossed the goal line.
Colorado College has now played four consecutive overtime games, all of which at home, counting the 2-1 loss to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Rhodes College in the 2010 season finale.
The last time the Tigers played to a scoreless tie was Sept. 12, 2010, against Penn State-Behrend.
CC puts its three-game unbeaten streak on the line this Saturday at St. Olaf College. The Tigers conclude the two-game road trip to Minnesota against Carleton College on Sunday.
