Rose-Hulman Takes Wabash 3-1 on Soccer Pitch
Freshman Ivaylo Mantchev scored his first career goal to draw Wabash even with Rose-Hulman, but the Fightin' Engineers added two more goals in the first half for a 3-1 win.
Mantchev's goal answered an early tally by Clint Vatterrodt, who scored in the eighth minute of the match. Vatterrodt added another goal seven minutes later to secure the win for Rose.
"We played well enough up front in the second half, and really even in the first half," head coach Roberto Giannini said. "We were just not well organized in the back. We did not have good communication. We gave away three goals.
"We just lost track of a couple of guys for Rose in the back, and that led to the final two goals. We dominated the ball possession in the second half of the match. It's disappointing because we could have really matched well with Rose. We played a new lineup in the second half and sorted some things out and kept Rose from being as dangerous."
Mantchev had two of the Little Giants' four shots on goal in the contest. Blake Jennings and Tommy Pecar each had one for Wabash. Matt Paul stopped two shot attempts by Rose-Hulman.
"The good news is we get to regroup on Sunday," Giannini said. "Tomorrow is another day. We have to come out ready to play from the start."
Wabash (1-2-1) returns to action at home on Sunday afternoon against Earlham in a 2 p.m. contest.
