Wall, Bonfini Power Ohio Wesleyan Over Carnegie Mellon
Senior forward Travis Wall collected 2 goals and an assist and senior forward Matt Bonfini contributed a goal and 2 assists to power 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan over 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon in the second round of the adidas® Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.
In Saturday's opener, 10th-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) built a 4-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat Capital.
Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an early lead when sophomore midfielder Jon Stegner had his shot hit the crossbar, fielded the rebound, and found Bonfini for the goal just 3:10 into the action.
Sophomore midfielder Paolo Bucci made it 2-0 midway through the half, taking a header from senior midfielder Dylan Stone and depositing it into the Tartan goal.
Stone pushed the Bishop lead to 3-0 early in the second half, finishing a chance after a Wall free kick.
The Wall and Bonfini combination clicked for Ohio Wesleyan's next two goals, with Wall taking a pass from Bonfini and scoring in the 53rd minute, then duplicating that in the 65th minute.
Senior forward Tyler Bryant buried a shot off a crossing pass from sophomore back Ben Witkoff in the 70th minute, and freshman midfielder Dan Thornton wrapped up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with a goal off a crossing pass from sophomore forward Aaron Manning in the 87th minute.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Carnegie Mellon, 22-4. Junior Paul Hendricks, senior Steve Gobel, and sophomore Zach Khalifa combined for 3 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Zach Stahl recorded 3 saves in the Tartan goal.
Friday's first game saw Wheaton take the lead in the second of minute of play when Josh Clark crossed the ball to Cory Weaver, who fired a shot past the right post.
Adam Blackman added a pair of goals just over 3 minutes apart later in the period, and the Thunder made it 4-0 in the closing minutes of the half when Brendan Finnerty drilled a shot from outside the penalty area.
Capital got on the scoreboard midway through the second half when Nick Eley headed home a corner kick, and Tim Rieser finished off a cross from Al Argyris in the 67th minute to wrap up the scoring.
Wheaton outshot Capital, 23-8. Bob Weisgarber had 13 saves in working the complete-game shutout for Capital, while Ryan Seager finished with 2 saves for the Thunder.
