All Around Effort Paces CSU San Marcos Past Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – CSU San Marcos posted a 5-0 win over Caltech Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer match-up at Caltech's North Field.

CSU San Marco's (3-3) offense peppered the Beavers defense with 10 shots on goal while holding a 12-3 edge in corner kicks. The Cougars defense held Caltech (0-2) without a shot on goal.

In the early stages of the contest Caltech's first year goalie Juan Pablo Ocampo kept the Cougars off the board, blocking the first four shots he faced. CSU San Marcos got on the board in the 31st minute when Alex Brunsell headed the ball into the back of the net. The freshman's goal came off two nice passes from Ryan VanDenburg's throw-in then a flick into the box from Richard Kaiser for the first half's only goal.

In the opening 45 minutes of action the Cougars posted a 5-0 edge in shots on goal while holding an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Cougars added to their lead in the 52nd minute when Eric Lopez took a pass from the right side off of Alex Rodriguez and put the ball into the back of the open net from five yards out. The Cougars stretch their lead to 3-0 when Brunsell's centering pass from the left side deflected of a Caltech defender and into the net in the 76th minute.

Sterling Petersen added a goal from 18 yards out in the 89th minute before Andrew Podruski Petersen scored the afternoon's final goal in the 90th minute off a blast from the same location.

The goalie duo of Andrew Castro and Kane Leonard posted the shutout for the Cougars.
