NYU Men's Soccer Earns First Win of 2011

The New York University men's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2011 season in decisive fashion, defeating the City College of New York 4-0 on Monday afternoon, September 12, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Violets (1-2-1) outshot the Beavers (1-4-1) 22-7 while controlling possession for most of the game. Billy Cordova scored the first two goals of his career for NYU, and Paolo Luciano and Kyle Green, both Second Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honorees last season, each netted a goal, as well.

In addition to Cordova's first goals, three other freshmen, Theo Wells, Nimo Freitag Bergstroem and Mac Yumoto, recorded their first career points with one assist apiece.

"I thought our finishing was good, and we had some good bouts of passing in the second half," said NYU head coach Joe Behan. "Playing all the young players is very important for our future and for the season."

Cordova had the biggest game of those young players, finally putting the Violets on the board with just 3:38 remaining before halftime. Wells fed Cordova in the middle of the field, and Cordova beat a defender and fired a shot that struck the right post and found the back of the net.

With the lead in hand, NYU netted three more goals in a six-minute span midway through the second half. First, in the 65th minute, Luciano played a through ball to Green in the box, and Green flicked a shot past the charging goalkeeper for his first tally of the season.

Just 33 seconds later, Luciano scored a goal of his own. Freitag Bergstroem played a ball to him on the left side, and Luciano buried a shot to make it a 3-0 game.

Six minutes later, Cordova added his second goal, putting in a rebound on a hard shot by Yumoto that was saved.

"It was a positive getting a 'W' on the board," commented Behan.

The Violets return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Pomona, NJ, to take on Richard Stockton College, a squad receiving votes in both national polls. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
