Marlins shut out in loss in Atlanta
ATLANTA -- A two-game swing into the Atlanta area started with a loss for Virginia Wesleyan College's men's soccer team as the Marlins fell 5-0 to Emory University's Eagles on Friday.
The Eagles (3-3) stunned the Marlins (3-3) early, scoring just 18 seconds into the non-conference competition. Zach Samuels (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) scored on a breakaway, finishing a pass from Javier Puga (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon).
Emory rode the 1-0 score for 18 minutes before striking again, this time with Puga doing the scoring on a slider. Andrew Natalino (Marietta, Ga./Walton) assisted on the play. The Eagles, winners of three consecutive games, added the third goal in the 26th minute when Alex Scott (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hindsale Central) headed the ball in off a free kick by David Garofalo (Macon, Ga./Mount de Sales).
Emory closed out the scoring in the 76th and 77th minutes with goals by Kamron Zia (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Dylan Price (Great Falls, Va./Langley).
Seniors Jay Coble (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) and Ryan Zmuda (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) played in goal for the Marlins. Coble finished with three saves in nearly 33 minutes, and Zmuda recorded six saves in 57+ minutes. Alex Wong (San Francisco, Calif./Marin Academy) had one save for EU and Andrew Goldblum (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) finished with two.
Emory out-shot VWC 19-7, including 10-3 in the first half. Both teams finished with five corner kicks.
VWC plays again on Sunday, Sept. 18 in the second game of the Atlanta trip, at 1 p.m. at Berry College. The Vikings enter the game with a 2-2 record.
