Dylan Roman Scores a Pair of Goals in No. 6 Washington University Men’s Soccer 3-1 Win at Home Over Greenville
St. Louis, Mo., September 17, 2011 – The No. 6 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over Greenville College on Saturday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
Senior Dylan Roman was the story for the Bears, as he scored two second-half goals to increase his team-leading total to six. Roman has also scored in five-straight games for Washington University.
The Bears struck first in the sixth minute of the contest. Junior Zach Query made a nice run down the sideline and flicked a ball to sophomore Jeremy Kirkwood, who buried a shot past Greenville goalkeeper Nathan Haas to make it 1-0. The Bears outshot Greenville, 12-6, in the opening 45 minutes, and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Roman scored just 16 seconds into the second half on a breakaway goal to make it 2-0. Sophomore Michael Flowers assisted on the goal as he fed a through ball to Roman who took a few dribbles before firing a shot in to the back of the net.
Roman scored his second goal of the game at 53:02 when he hammered a shot from 20 yards out to the near corner.
Greenville (2-3-3) ended the shutout with a goal at 89:36 following a left-footed free kick from David Cole. The goal ended the Bears' scoreless streak of 438 minutes, a span of almost five games.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathon Jebson played 83 minutes in goal making four saves, while sophomore Michael McCarthy played the final seven minutes and allowed one goal. Washington U. outshot Greenville 18-13 for the game and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington University (6-0) concludes its three-game home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 21 against Westminster College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Francis Field.
