Royals' Offense Clicks In 4-1 Victory Over Mount Saint Mary College
Sophomore forward Derek Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) scored a pair of second-half goals and senior midfielder Joesph Burbella (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and freshman midfielder Sam Davitt (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) added goals as The University of Scranton earned a 4-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) on Sunday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Burbella put the Royals on the board in the 23rd minute when he punched home a shot from in front of the net on a feed from freshman forward Kevin Kozic (Raritan, N.J./Immaculata). Davitt gave Scranton a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute when he buried a shot from 12 yards out on an assist from junior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West).
Scranton carried that lead into halftime as junior goalkeeper James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made three saves in the first half. He finished the game with four.
Klingman came off the bench to score both of Scranton's goals in the second half. His first came on a direct kick from 28 yards out that he rifled through the Mount Saint Mary defense and past the diving goalie for the first tally of his career.
After junior forward Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) put the Knights on the board in the 71st minute, making the score 3-1, Klingman pushed the Royals' cushion back to three goals when he scored in the final minute. The goal came off a feed from sophomore forward John Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus).
For both Klingman and Davitt, it was the first goals of their careers, while Burbella scored his third of the season – all in the last two games -- and seventh of his career.
Scranton outshot Mount Saint Mary, 24-11, and put 12 shots on goal in the contest.
The Royals return to action Tuesday when they host Misericordia at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
