POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- After a scoreless first half, the #1 Captains of Christopher Newport University erupted for four goals in the second to take a road win at Vassar College (5-2-1). CNU improves to 5-0-1 this season as four different players scored for the Captains.

The Captains wasted no time breaking the shutout in the second half, as freshman Jalon Brown (Yorktown, Va.) connected for the eventual gamewinner off an assist from Caleb Lewis (Mechanicsville, Va.) just 1:12 into the frame. Lewis' throw-in reached the box, where Brown headed it into the lower corner for the score.
In the 62nd minute of action, Lybert crossed a pass into the box for Mattheisen, who scored his fourth goal of the season. Just ten minutes later, sophomore Alex Makumbi (Kampala, Uganda) sent a long ball over the defense, and Kummer reached the ball first. The junior had a breakaway down the left side and his shot got by Vassar keeper Ryan Grimme.
CNU wrapped up the scoring barrage in the 77th minute when sophomore Jack Cooper (Blacksburg, Va.) connected for his third goal of the season. He followed up a rebound off Kummer's shot on-goal, saved by Grimme.
The Captains took nine shots in the second half, putting five on-goal. CNU had ten shots on-goal while holding Vassar to just four in the game. Wolfe posted his second shutout of the season, saving all four shots.
CNU returns to action Wednesday, when they travel to one of the top teams in regional competition, Salisbury University. The Sea Gulls, ranked #20 in the nation, suffered its first loss of the season this weekend to Mary Washington, but still sports a 4-1-1 overall record.
