Men’s Soccer: Cadets Fall 3-2 to Emerson
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's soccer team dropped a tough 3-2 match to the visiting Emerson College Lions at Howard Field on Saturday during Norwich University's Parents' and Family Weekend.
After Norwich sophomore forward Joe Young scored at the 64:26 mark of the match to tie it at two, Emerson's Evan Gooden responded just 1:02 later to give the Lions a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish.
Gooden scored from the top of the penalty area, beating NU goalkeeper Alex Toomey to his left to stop the Cadets' momentum.
Norwich (3-6-0, 1-2-0 GNAC) struck first just 6:33 into the first half when Ryan Campbell put home a loose ball from the center of the penalty area off an assist from sophomore defender Wesley Keslin.
Even though Norwich controlled the possession for much of the first half, Emerson was able to draw even when Ken Nikravesh put home a rebound after Toomey made an initial save in the 42nd minute.
The Lions (2-5-0, 2-1-0 GNAC) took their first lead of the match in the 54th minute when Alex Sypsomos scored an unassisted goal to put Emerson up 2-1.
Young briefly tied it up at two before Gooden posted the winning goal to lift the Lions for the second straight year over NU.
Norwich's Garrett Shufelt nearly tied the game at three with 15 minutes to go but his header attempt off a service from Mike Ravenelle ricocheted off the crossbar.
Noah Price picked up the win for Emerson after turning aside six shots. Toomey was saddled with the loss after making five saves.
Norwich will look to get back on track on Wednesday when it travels to Mount Ida for another GNAC contest scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
