Stone, North Goals Leave Streaks Blue

More news about: Ohio Wesleyan men's team

Senior midfielder Dylan Stone and junior back Kit North scored goals that gave seventh-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a 2-0 lead, and the Bishops went on to take a 2-1 non-conference win over John Carroll on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.

John Carroll manufactured the first good scoring chance of the game, when Wycliffe Odhiambo collected a centering pass and got off a shot that Bishop keeper Paul Hendricks stopped with a diving save.

The Bishops took the lead in the 34th minute after the Blue Streaks committed a foul in the penalty area, and Stone converted the ensuing penalty kick.

Ohio Wesleyan had a good chance to increase its lead late in the first half when senior forward Tyler Bryant  made an outstanding play to save the ball from going out of bounds in front of the Bishop bench, triggering a break by sophomore forward Joe Beshara. Beshara took the ball all the way downfield into the John Carroll penalty area, but his return pass to a streaking Bryant was deflected by a John Carroll defender and snagged by Blue Streak keeper Carl Contrascier.

The Bishops added to the lead early in the second half after a John Carroll foul. Senior back Andrew Miller lined up for a restart about 40 yards from the JCU goal and launched the ball into the box, where North headed it home to make it a 2-0 game.

John Carroll closed to within 2-1 on a similar play. Awarded a restart near the midfield line, John Carroll sent the ball into the penalty area. Hendricks went up in a crowd to get the ball, but the ball went free after a midair collision, and Mariusz Trzeciak knocked the loose ball into the open goal with 12:58 left in regulation time.

The Blue Streaks had a couple chances at the tying goal, the best coming with 3:20 left in regulation when Odhiambo served the ball into the penalty area to Trzeciak, but Hendricks grabbed Trzeciak's header to preserve the lead.

Hendricks finished with 7 saves in going the distance in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Contrascier finished with 2 saves in the Blue Streak goal.
