Gators Earn Shutout in Conference Opener
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Allegheny men's soccer team scored early and often, en route to a 3-0 victory at Wittenberg, Sunday afternoon. The win was the first for the Gators at Wittenberg since a 1-0 victory in 2005.
After a tough loss to 16th ranked Baldwin-Wallace, it was important that Allegheny come out and establish themselves early in their conference opener. Establish themselves they did, as junior David DelGreco opened the scoring in the 11th minute, when he netted his team leading fifth goal of the year to put the Gators up 1-0.
Allegheny would not stop at one, as 14 minutes later sophomore Andrew Miller scored his third goal of the season to give the Gators a two goal cushion. With the Tigers reeling, Allegheny put their foot on the gas, and sophomore Brian Graham would put the Gators up 3-0 just two and a half minutes after Miller put them up two.
Allegheny's defense would take it from there, as they would allow the Tigers to get off just three shots in the second half, none of them on net, as they would cruse to the 3-0 victory and pick up their first conference win of the 2011 season.
Sophomore John Lichina would earn his fourth shutout of the season, as the Gators improved to 7-2-0 overall, and 1-0-0 in NCAC play.
Allegheny will take to the pitch next on Saturday, October 1 as they will host NCAC for Denison at 5:00 pm at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
