Western New England Deals Nichols a 3-0 Setback

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior midfielder Eric Marcelino (Farmington, Conn.) and sophomore forward Ryan Williams (Brewster, N.Y.) each tallied a goal and an assist to lead Western New England to a 3-0 win over Nichols on Wednesday in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Suprenant Field.

The Golden Bears improve to 8-2-1 (3-0 CCC); while the Bison slip to 5-3-1 (1-2-1 CCC). 

WNE grabbed an early lead as Williams converted the teams first chance of the day in the 12th minute, he was assisted by Marcelino and sophomore midfielder Alex Covino (Bristol, Conn.).

The Golden Bears clung to their 1-0 lead through halftime as both sides struggled for quality chances with just three shots each. 

In the 55th minute, senior midfielder Corey Howard (Hopedale, Mass.) launched a throw in that was headed down by senior midfielder Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) for Marcelino to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 advantage.

Senior forward John Rusin (Chicopee, Mass.) added an insurance tally just a minute later to make it a 3-0 game as he was set up by Howard and Williams.

WNE sophomore goalkeeper Domenick Villano (Bronxville, N.Y.) turned away three shots to record the shutout win in net. 

Nichols freshman goalkeeper Alexsandro Usevicius (Milford, Mass.) made two stops in 72:17 minutes of play; while senior goalie George Quireyns (Holbrook, Mass.) made one stop in relief.

Western New England returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Eastern Nazarene for a 3:00 p.m. CCC match. The Bison will host the University of New England at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday in conference play.
